How do you protect footballers from being attacked at home?
Footballer safety in the UK is a rising issue – and it is important that high-profile athletes are protected in their homes.
If your first response is “they need better security,” you may be missing the point.
While it’s possible that flaunting wealth or posting everything online makes them an easy target, the problem of footballer safety is more complex than that.
To solve the problem, we need to understand their position and change our response. High profile individuals, such as footballers, are subjected to frequent media attention.
It’s not practical for footballers to hide their wealth and the evidence of their successes.
They are never responsible for being targeted by organised criminals in planned and calculated attacks, often where they feel most comfortable: at their homes.
One of the key issues is actually speaking with the client, rather than just their advisors. This is key in ensuring footballers feel safe within their own home.
If footballers or other HNW clients have yet to be convinced of the appropriate measures to take, then it is the professionals who work for them and advise them that have failed. It is not the footballer’s fault.
The solution isn’t that they must be more discrete, more careful, or less successful. It falls on those of us who work with the footballer or HNW clients to understand the issues better and then work with the client to agree on the appropriate solutions that work.
Remember, “Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood” when dealing with footballer safety issues.
